In the beginning of 1990th I was asked if I wanted to participate in a study about Fibromyalgia. Before this I had worked with athletes and sport people. Now I had to go from traditional massage to very soft touch since some of the patients was so sensitive that the slightest touch were painful. As you can understand, these ways to give massage are in the opposite side of the spectrum when it comes to pressure on the muscles etc. The only way to develop a soft tough massage was through feedback from the patients who i gave massage. It was only them who say if it felt good or not.
Patients with Fibromyalgia are suffering from an invisible syndrome that make them handicapped. The pain is subjective experience and I have learnt ?the pain is what the patient says it is?!
Fibromyalgia affects the entire person, both the body and the soul, and must the treated based on this. Fibromassage is a concept that take care of the entire person, it includes for example mental training, nutrition and other soft training. All these parts are important for the final result.
Many patients see that massage as breathing space to build up strength to themselves and their health.
Fibro massage is not a passive treatment rather a possibility to get a moment for yourself without requirements and output.
This can be a much-needed rest for patients with Fibromyalgia, since many of these demand a lot of themselves.
The experience well-being, pain-relief and reduce stress, and the massage itself, fulfil one of our basic need for tough, make me grateful to have the opportunity to work with this group of patients.
In our courses for fibromasseurs, we want to explain how these patients need to be met to get the best result. How to meet the patient with respect for their individual experiences, is a big part of the course. I hope that you feel that we have this ambition, when you come to one of our fibromasseuses where you live.
Thanks for your time.
